Ryoko Goto
Sep 1 - Sep 13 2009 She studied art, mainly oil painting, at Musashino Art Junior College. After she finished school, she had many solo exhibitions and performed live paintings in Tokyo, which she continues today. Her favorite artists include Saburo Aso, Jackson Pollock, Isamu Noguchi. She tries not to have only one theme in her paintings, because she thinks that “humans are versatile.” She prefers watercolor and mixed media watercolor over oil color, because of the feel and impression that one gets from the motifs. For her more conventional media works, she has used hemp, Japanese paper, glia, colors for Japanese traditional paintings, and paper clay, etc. |

Pro Et Contra
Takeshi Komura
May 26 - Jun 7 2009
" I strive to capture this essential portraiture in my works. The title of this exhibit, "pro et contra," comes from the title of a chapter in Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov. It depicts the climax of the violent inner-philosophical struggle of a young monk, who is the main character of the story, between his beloved teacher and brother and between faith and atheism. "Pro et contra" is Latin for "for and against," and is the root of the terms "pro and con" in English. |
